From the artist
Walking through a sparse winter landscape, this skeletal tree stopped me mid-stride. Against the white sky, it appeared like a stroke of calligraphy: elegant, severe and utterly final. As I raised my camera, a small raptor passed through the bare branches.
Zanshin (残心) is a Japanese martial and Zen term meaning “the mind that remains”: a state of lingering awareness after an action is complete. In that fraction of a second, the stillness of the tree and the fleeting movement of the bird came together.
