From the artist
I came across this ancient Quiver Tree in the stark landscape of South Africa’s Northern Cape. Its extraordinary form immediately drew me in: the massive trunk seemed to carry the face of an old man, while its few remaining branches reached outwards.
Among the San people, there is a belief that the soul of a dying man can become trapped within a Quiver Tree. Standing before this particular tree, that story took on new meaning. I began to see it not simply as something dying, but as something still holding a life within it. I titled the photograph Kuchiki no Tamashii: The Soul of the Withered Tree.
