From the artist
This work was born from a quiet fascination with the marks humans leave on the earth. High on a distant hill, five trees stood beneath a gathering storm. Below them, deep agricultural furrows drew the eye towards the horizon. I later learned that the trees had been deliberately left to provide shade for sheep: remnants of an older purpose in a landscape reshaped by farming and time.
Kareno (枯野) is a Japanese literary word for a desolate or withered field, an image found in classical poetry and associated with the passing of seasons and what remains.
