The tectonic folds and geological rhythmic contortions so beautifully revealed in the Swartberg pass echo the multiple movements characteristic of the symphony music form. The graphic dynamism of this work evolved out of contemplating the very essence of the forces that gives rise to such a geological phenomena. In geological time the fast and slow movements are clearly not as evident as experienced listening to the movements characteristic of the symphony. Altogether an unfinished ‘form’ in relation to one’s own time, but in musical terms timeless, of lasting inspirational power – beyond the lifetime of the composer.
