Bio

Robyn Daly is an Irish-South African fine art photographer based in rural Ireland. Before turning to fine art photography, she worked as a magazine photojournalist and editor later establishing a successful commercial photography studio.

She has served as a juror for several photographic competitions, including the Fuji Wildlife Awards and Getaway Gallery Awards, and has co-authored several books on travel and photography. She holds an MA in English Literature from Rhodes University, where she specialised in women's studies and nineteenth-century fairy tales.

Robyn moved to Ireland from South Africa in 2020 and lives in a semi-derelict 1920s farmhouse that has become both her home and the setting for much of her photographic practice. Her photograph The Chemistry Of Me forms part of the Levett Collection at FAMM (Femmes Artistes du Musée de Mougins), France.

Artist Statement

As an immigrant whose life has been shaped by movement, I am intrigued by the connections we establish with places and how identity, decay and sensuality intermingle to shape our evolving sense of self. Photographing in the domestic spaces of derelict and abandoned houses in Ireland, I use myself as subject to create the conditions in which body, place and time enter into relation.

Movement is a hallmark of my visual language, explored through performance and long exposures that present figures in states of transformation. Where women have traditionally been positioned as objects of observation and confined within domestic roles, my work considers the female form as active, self-determining and lived.

This opens up new possibilities. The body becomes unstable in beautiful ways, allowing new forms to emerge. Underpinning my work is a belief that the fixed image is too small: life is larger, stranger, less stable and more generous than the versions we habitually present to the world.

Through the interplay of light, time and movement, the photographs move beyond documentation. I am interested not in whether photography can accurately describe a body, but whether it can express what it feels like to live in one.
