Bio

Grady T Zeeman is a South African contemporary painter whose practice reflects a distinctive blend of formal training anddecades of dedicated studio work. A 1988 graduate of Cape Technicon, where she studied Fashion Design, Zeeman began her career as a designer in Cape Town before redirecting her focus entirely to painting, a pivotal shift that would set the course for aninternational career.

Committed to continual growth as an artist, Zeeman spent years refining her oil painting technique while broadening herknowledge through further study in art history, exhibition curation, and the professional workings of the art world. This combination of hands-on craft and critical understanding has shaped a practice that is both technically assured and conceptually engaged.

Her international presence began in 2008 with a group exhibition in India, marking her first step onto the global stage. This was followed by her debut solo exhibition in Rome in October 2020, gaining international recognition. Since then, Zeeman has exhibited extensively in both group and solo shows across South Africa, the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, and Asia, building a body of work that resonates across diverse cultural contexts.

Beyond her studio practice, Zeeman has played a significant role in shaping South Africa's art community.
From 2011 to 2017, she owned and directed Kunstehuijs Art Gallery, a platform through which she championed not only her own work but also that of fellow South African artists, helping to elevate the local art scene. She remains an active and engaged figure within the broader arts community today, maintaining close ties with South African and international arts organisations.

Zeeman currently serves as a board member of the Association for Visual Arts (AVA) in Cape Town, continuing her commitment to supporting and advancing the visual arts.

Artist Statement

The pursuit of wisdom has been a defining force throughout my life. T.S. Eliot's words hit close to home: "Where is the Life we have lost in living? Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge?" They speak to something I have always felt: that beneath the noise of daily existence lies a deeper current, one my art alone can navigate.

Though a devout Anglican, I have long been captivated by various spiritual traditions, not out of doubt but out of hunger. I believe wisdom belongs to no single tradition, and that every religion, every sacred practice, carries light worth seeking. Viktor Frankl wrote that "life is never made unbearable by circumstances, but only by lack of meaning and purpose." It is precisely this purpose I have found in my art. Through painting, I hold the conversations I have always dreamed of having with the sages, teachers,
and quiet mystics of every tradition.

My work searches for the common ground that runs beneath all faith: the love, longing, joy, and luminous thread connecting us all to the Divine. I begin each painting with a thin layer of acrylic, building into rich, textured oil. This process is personal: the fluid underpainting speaks to the places where religions breathe together in shared reverence, mercy, and mystery. The bold areas speak to our differences; not as wounds or judgement, but as evidence of the diversity of the human search for the sacred.

Each painting holds three figures, which is never incidental. Three has long been seen as a symbol of completeness across traditions - the Trinity in my own Anglican faith, the triratna of Buddhism, the Hindu Trimurti, and the body-mind-spirit of countless mystical schools. My figures are not meant to represent
three traditions in competition, but three voices in one shared conversation.
